Sciatica treatment can vary depending on the severity of the pain and if it’s chronic; however, many sciatica suffers are forced to turn to pain medication and surgery for relief. Although these are the common sciatica pain treatments here at Gentle Wellness Center, we do not believe they are the best options. At our center we prefer a gentler touch. Many of our sciatica patients find relief using a combination of alternative sciatica treatments including sciatic massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic therapy.
What Is Sciatica Pain?
Commonly referred to as Sciatica, this type of radiating pain is caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve. The Sciatic nerve is a large nerve that extends from the lower back down the back of each leg.
Sciatic Pain Symptoms:
Sciatic pain will usually only affect one side of the lower body. Common symptoms include:
- Lower back pain
- Hip pain
- Pain in the buttock or leg
- Burning or tingling down the leg
- Weakness or numbness of leg
- Shooting pain
What Causes Sciatic Pain?
Sciatic Pain is caused by the irritation of the sciatic nerve. This irritation can be caused by:
- Injury of the piriformis muscle (commonly injured in slips and fall)
- Legs that aren’t the same length
- Spinal Stenosis – the narrowing of the spine
- Degenerative Disk Disease, Herniated Disks, Slipped Disks
- Nerve death from diabetes
Age, obesity, prolonged sitting, jobs that require a lot of lifting/twisting/turning are all risk factors for developing sciatica.
Depending on the cause of the sciatica pain, certain treatments will be used. This is why it’s important to contact an expert rather than doing at home exercises/remedies.
Alternative Sciatica Treatments:
At one point in their lives many people will end up dealing with sciatic pain. Over the counter medications, heat, and rest can all help sciatic pain; however, if your pain keeps reoccurring it’s best to get to the root of the problem. Thankfully, there are natural and alternative solutions to help you find relief.
Acupuncture, a type of traditional Chinese medicine, is an effective & safe sciatica treatment. In fact, a recent review of studies showed that acupuncture was more effective than conventional Western medicine. Acupuncture had better results when it came to effectiveness, reducing pain intensity, and increasing pain threshold. Acupuncture works by relaxing the muscles around the sciatic nerve, increasing blood flow to the area, and releasing natural pain killers such as endorphins. Much safer than invasive surgeries, acupuncture is a gentler alternative to treat your sciatic pain.
Sciatica massage is an extremely effective and gentle way to treat sciatica that is caused by injury or muscle issues. Sciatica massages work in two ways. First a sciatica massage will focus on reducing the tension and relaxing the muscles in the lower back especially the piriformis muscle. This will stop the muscles from pinching the sciatic nerve which is what creates the pain. Second, massages release endorphins into the body acting as a natural pain reliever temporarily giving you relief. Using massage as a sciatica treatment is a much safer way of treating these symptoms than invasive surgeries, and much faster than waiting for the injury to heal itself.
Seeing a chiropractor for sciatica pain is typically effective. A chiropractor will be able to take X-rays and perform a structural examination to determine what is causing pressure on the sciatic nerve. Once the root cause is determined chiropractic adjustments can help relieve nerve irritability caused by pressure on the sciatic nerve. In response you will see a reduction in inflammation, muscle spasms, pain, and other sciatica symptoms.
A chiropractor may also use a machine that utilizes electrical currents to treat your sciatica. This machine is used to stimulate the muscles which in turn controls pain and muscle spasms. Using an electrical current to treat your sciatica may seem scary but it’s completely safe and painless.
