Food Sensitivity Testing-Food Intolerance 2

In the past few years we have seen a rise in the amount of the population that experiences reactivity or sensitivity from certain types of food. Unfortunately, traditional medicine typically only recognizes true food allergies not food intolerances or food sensitivities. This leaves a huge subsection of the population struggling with the symptoms of food intolerance without a solution. Thankfully, Naturopathic Doctors, have stepped up to help create tests to identify food intolerance/food sensitivity and to create treatments plans and nutrition plans to relieve their client’s symptoms.

Difference Between A Food Allergy and A Food Intolerance/Food Sensitivity:

There are 3 types of immune reactions, IgA and IgG reactions are known as delayed response reactions, which are food sensitivities/food intolerances. IgE reactions are immediate and are considered true food allergies.

A true food allergy is an IgE reaction from your immune system that comes on rapidly after eating just a small amount of the food. Food allergies tend to be triggered by fish, shellfish, nuts, mile, and eggs. Allergies can be very serious and life threatening.

A food intolerance/food sensitivity stems from and IgA and IgG reaction and is not life threatening; however, the symptoms can range from annoying to debilitating. Symptoms come on slowly after eating problem foods, reactions can be delayed by hours or even days. Reactions to trigger foods typically do not occur from just traces of the food. A reasonable amount of food must be eaten to trigger a reaction. Food intolerances/sensitivities can be caused by a much larger range of food.

Common Food Intolerances:

The most common food intolerances/sensitivities include:

  • lactose
  • wheat
  • gluten
  • caffeine
  • monosodium glutamate (MSG)
  • histamine (found in mushrooms, pickled and cured foods, and alcoholic drinks)
  • artificial sweeteners
  • food coloring
  • preservatives
  • flavor enhancers

Food Sensitivity/Intolerance Testing:

Treating food intolerances/food sensitivities typically involves removing the triggering food from your diet, but this can be difficult to do if you don’t know exactly what it is that is making you sick. This is where food sensitivity testing comes in.

Food sensitivity/food intolerance testing is usually done in the form of a blood test. Naturopathic Doctors looks for IgA and IgG reactions in your body that traditional physicians and allergists miss during traditional food allergy testing.

Food sensitivity/food intolerance testing can help you get started on the path to health. Eliminating food groups blindly can be time consuming and stressful, with food sensitivity testing you can skip this part and identify what your trigger foods are. Once identified our Naturopathic Doctor and Certified Nutritionist will work with you to develop a diet that supports the health of your body while eliminating trigger foods, repairing any damage that has already been done, and healing any other issues you have, such as leaky gut syndrome.

What If I Don’t Want To Do Food Sensitivity Testing?

If you would prefer to not do food sensitivity testing, we can still help. Our Naturopathic Doctor can help walk you through an elimination diet to identify your trigger foods, heal your gut, and eliminate symptoms.  An elimination diet is when you stop eating all the most common allergens for 3 weeks or more and then add them back into your diet one by one, keeping detailed notes to see if any symptoms/reactions occur. This is great if you’re food sensitivity/food intolerance is one of the common ones; however, it can fail if your food trigger is rare or uncommon.

Having a Naturopathic Doctor and Nutrition Specialist on your side during the elimination diet is key in order to recognize trigger foods and to make sure you’re getting all your nutrients on a limited diet.
