How Medical Cannabis Helps Cancer Patients

How Medical Marijuana Helps Cancer Patients?

Chemotherapy, also known as ‘’chemo’’ is an aggressive chemical drug therapy used to treat cancer. It works by killing the rapidly dividing cancer cells in your body. Why do you experience generalized side effects of chemo? Since chemotherapy is a systemic treatment, it not only targets rapidly growing cancer cells but also affects healthy fast-growing cells. This systemic effect of chemotherapy is the reason for the side effects linked to it.

What Side Effects Can You Experience?

Chemotherapy has variable side effects with different severities. What are the common side effects for which you must prepare yourself? These include fatigue, dry mouth, oral ulcers, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, weight loss, pain (headache, muscle pain, stomach pain, or pain due to nerve damage), anemia, hair loss, easy bruising, skin and nail changes, diarrhea or constipation, central nervous system problems (problem with concentration, memory, balance).

Medical marijuana can help in alleviating the side effect of chemotherapy. Medical marijuana is marijuana prescribed by the physician to treat certain illnesses. There are more than 100 compounds known as cannabinoids in marijuana or cannabis. But the effective ones producing effects are, Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD). Various studies have found that marijuana helps alleviate some of the effects and side effects of cancer and chemotherapy.

Now the question is, for which side effects of chemotherapy marijuana will be effective? Nausea and vomiting, one of the common and early side effects of chemo, can be alleviated using marijuana. FDA has also approved it for managing chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting, where other management options have failed.

Marijuana also eases the pain associated with cancer and chemotherapy. The pain can be so severe that you cannot feel relieved even by potent pain medications. Neuropathic pain (pain caused by nerve damage) is a very common side effect of chemotherapy, which is progressive. Medical marijuana is known to ease cancer-related pain and chemo associated neuropathic pain. It binds with the cannabinoid receptors in the brain and other body parts to exert pain-relieving effects.

The FDA also approves medical marijuana for loss of appetite, a commonly seen side effect due to chemotherapy.
